New multitasking features in iOS 17.4 beta: This has been a rather hectic day at 9to5Mac. A number of modifications have been made to the App Store and its ecosystem in the European Union since Apple released the new multitasking features in iOS 17.4 beta. However, certain updates are available to all users. See a summary of all the recent additions to iOS 17.4 below.

21E5184i is the build number for iOS 17.4. Developers who have registered can now download it by navigating to “General” in the Settings app and selecting “Software Update.” We anticipate that later this week or early next week, iOS 17.4 will be made available to public beta testers.

  • iOS 17.4, as I indicated at the beginning, brings with it a plethora of significant changes to the App Store and its wider ecosystem for European Union iPhone owners. This contains much more, such as the first-ever support for third-party app stores, modifications to the policies governing default web browsers, and game streaming apps. This is a summary of everything we covered today:
  • With iOS 17.4, Apple announced support for third-party iPhone app shops in the EU.
  • In the EU, Apple will ask consumers to enable third-party web engines and configure default browsers on their iPhones.
  • Apple introduces a lower European app commission structure.
  • App Store users can now download game-streaming apps from Apple.
  • Apple allows NFC chips to function in Europe, providing an alternative to Apple Pay.

Transcripts in Apple Podcasts

In iOS 17.4, the Apple Podcasts app has undergone a few significant updates. First, transcripts that are created automatically are now supported.  These transcripts will be produced automatically by Apple and shown within the Apple Podcasts application.

With iOS 17.4, the Now Playing bar at the bottom of the Apple Podcasts app has also undergone a change to better resemble Apple Music’s Now Playing bar.

Siri

With iOS 17.4, Siri has been improved to read messages in more languages than only the one that is assigned to it for all other jobs.

Go to Settings > Siri & Search > Messaging with Siri to get the new feature. There’s a new Add Language… button under the READ MESSAGES section, which prompts with a number of language possibilities.

Stolen Device Protection

As we noted this morning, iOS 17.4 now has an enhanced Stolen Device Protection function. Users can now choose to always request a security delay when modifying security settings. Previously, the only way to achieve the delay was to utilize it while you weren’t in familiar surroundings.

More iOS 17.4 tidbits

  • The “General” > “About” menu in the Settings app now contains a new “Identifiable Region” label.
  • Compared to iOS 17.3, Safari’s address bar is somewhat broader.
  • The Settings app now has a “Contactless & NFC” menu under the “Privacy” section; however, it is not operational at the moment.
  • In Germany, you may now choose to speak “Siri” instead of “Hey Siri.”
